It was founded on Nov. 1, 2016, by Barbara Buckman, a crafter since age 11, who turned her love of sewing, knitting and artisanal handicrafts into a business that helps others enjoy their skills and hobbies as well as buy the necessary supplies.
A portion of the store is dedicated to rug hooking by AK Designs. Annette King has been rug hooking for more than 25 years and offers free classes and can create custom designs. AK Designs carries wool fabric and yarn, canvases, hooks, frames and more for all your hooking needs
The 1800-square foot shop offers an impressive selection of bright, modern fabric and yarn choices in just the right colors needed for projects customers are working on. Barbara and Annette are available to help customers with their projects or inspire them to get back on track.
The relaxing atmosphere of Creative Threads encourages crafters to come in to socialize while shopping, sit down to work on a favorite project or learn something new in one of our classes that are offered. Get your own crafting group together and use our space as your meeting place.
About Barbara Buckman, owner/founder
Walk into Creative Threads in Wake Forest, NC, and you’ll witness the passion of shop owner Barbara Buckman. Creativity has woven its way through Barbara’s life while she worked as a legal secretary, a courthouse clerk for a public defender and a special education teacher’s aide.
In between those jobs, she tapped her creative side by sewing curtains for a consignment craft shop and starting a gift basket business with her daughter. She also helped organize a creative co-op of 25 artists who sold their work at an annual holiday craft show.
Barbara was born in Philadelphia and moved to Bucks County, Pennsylvania at age 11. The oldest of nine children (seven brothers and one sister), she learned to sew at a young age—self-taught and through middle school classes. Barbara says when she needed something to wear, she made it.
A crafter since age 11, she has enjoyed completing hundreds of quilting, sewing and craft projects for friends and family. She particularly enjoys creating memory quilts and t-shirt quilts for customers.
In 1971, Barbara married her husband Dave, who built the display shelves, yarn bins and other merchandising features found throughout the Creative Threads shop. He’s been the love of her life and a supportive partner for nearly 50 years. They have two grown daughters—Stacey, who lives in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, and Heather in Arlington, Virginia-- and are blessed with four granddaughters.
They now spoil their two West Highland White Terriers named Ollie and Luna who you can see on their very own page.
After living in Tennessee for seven years, where Dave managed a farm, the Buckman’s moved to Wake Forest in 2011. Barbara did work for a Triangle quilt shop before pursuing her own fabric and yarn shop closer to where she and Dave now call home.
Barbara’s dream of turning her love of sewing, knitting, and other handicrafts into a business became a reality in 2016 when she opened Creative Threads. It’s her desire to help others find the supplies, space, time and creativity to make what they love.
